The Mid-Autumn Festival is a traditional festival of China. Every year on the fifteenth day of the eighth month in the lunar calendar, the moon is round and bright. People say this day is for reunion. Many families go home to eat, chat, and look at the moon. Children carry lanterns, walk slowly in the park, and feel very warm. The main food of the Mid-Autumn Festival is the mooncake. The crust is golden, and inside there is often lotus paste, red bean paste, or egg yolk. The taste is sweet and fragrant, and there are also salty flavors. People often first cut open a mooncake, share it with family and friends, and express sharing and blessings. Some people also brew tea, taste tea while moon-gazing, and slowly chat about the day’s things. Many places have different customs. Some cities hold lantern fairs, and some schools arrange poetry readings. Children listen to the legend of Chang’e flying to the moon and imagine the osmanthus tree and the jade rabbit in the sky. In the quiet night, a cool breeze comes, everyone looks up at the sky, and thinks of relatives far away in their hearts. Today’s Mid-Autumn Festival is also very modern. People use mobile phones to send photos and greetings, saying “Happy Mid-Autumn.” Shops prepare beautiful gift boxes in advance, and companies give mooncakes to employees.
