A Day at the Prado Museum

Una visita al Museo del Prado

Visitar el Museo del Prado fue uno de los momentos más especiales de mi viaje a Madrid. Compré la entrada por internet y llegué temprano, porque todos me dijeron que la fila puede ser larga. Al acercarme al edificio vi la fachada elegante, los carteles con colores intensos y muchas personas con cámaras y mochilas. En la puerta un empleado me sonrió y me dio un mapa. Decidí empezar por Velázquez. Frente a Las Meninas me quedé en silencio. Observé la luz que entra por la ventana, las miradas de la infanta y de los personajes, y el espejo del fondo. Con la audioguía escuché una explicación clara, y entendí mejor la composición y la historia del cuadro. Después pasé a la sala de Goya. Las Pinturas Negras me impresionaron; sus figuras oscuras me hicieron pensar en el miedo y en la fuerza del artista. Más tarde busqué El Jardín de las Delicias de El Bosco. Me pareció extraño y divertido al mismo tiempo. Vi pequeños detalles, animales fantásticos y escenas que cambian según la distancia. A veces me acerqué mucho, y luego me alejé para ver el conjunto. Tomé notas en una libreta y saqué pocas fotos, porque preferí mirar con calma. Hice una pausa en el café del museo, pedí tortilla y un café con leche, y miré a los visitantes, que hablaban en varios idiomas. Volví para ver obras de El Greco y de Rubens, con colores vivos y figuras alargadas. Al salir pasé por la tienda y compré postales para mis amigos. Cuando cayó la tarde sentí que había viajado por siglos sin moverme del centro de la ciudad. Si tienes la oportunidad, te recomiendo llevar zapatos cómodos, reservar con tiempo y entrar con curiosidad; así tu visita al Prado será inolvidable. Antes de irme miré también algunas esculturas de mármol en un pasillo tranquilo, con sombras suaves y ecos de pasos. Salí despacio, respiré el aire fresco de Madrid y prometí volver en mi próxima visita.

Visiting the Prado Museum was one of the most special moments of my trip to Madrid. I bought the ticket online and arrived early, because everyone told me the line can be long. As I approached the building I saw the elegant facade, the banners with bright colors, and many people with cameras and backpacks. At the door an employee smiled at me and gave me a map. I decided to start with Velázquez. In front of Las Meninas I stayed silent. I observed the light that enters through the window, the looks of the princess and of the characters, and the mirror in the back. With the audio guide I listened to a clear explanation, and I understood the composition and the history of the painting better. Afterwards I went to the Goya room. The Black Paintings impressed me; their dark figures made me think about fear and the strength of the artist. Later I looked for The Garden of Earthly Delights by Bosch. It seemed strange and fun at the same time. I saw small details, fantastic animals, and scenes that change depending on the distance. Sometimes I got very close, and then I stepped back to see the whole. I took notes in a notebook and took few photos, because I preferred to look calmly. I took a break in the museum cafe, ordered tortilla and a coffee with milk, and watched the visitors, who spoke in several languages. I returned to see works by El Greco and by Rubens, with vivid colors and elongated figures. On the way out I went through the shop and bought postcards for my friends. When evening fell I felt that I had traveled through centuries without moving from the city center. If you have the chance, I recommend wearing comfortable shoes, booking in advance, and entering with curiosity; that way your visit to the Prado will be unforgettable. Before leaving I also looked at some marble sculptures in a quiet hallway, with soft shadows and echoes of footsteps. I left slowly, breathed the fresh air of Madrid, and promised to return on my next visit.
