Urban Sprawl in Rural Egypt

English Translation

In rural Egypt, urban expansion increases year after year. Villages in the past were quiet places filled with farms and trees. Farmers used to grow wheat and vegetables and sell them in local markets. But in recent decades cities have grown quickly and need housing, shops, and schools. Because of this, agricultural lands have been turned into buildings and streets. Some people see this change as important because it gives jobs and new services. However, farmers say they lost their lands and that agricultural production decreased a lot. This makes food more expensive and affects family life. Experts emphasize that good planning can keep balance between construction and the protection of agricultural lands. Today, the issue of urban expansion in the countryside is considered one of the most important problems affecting Egyptian society and its future.
