Ramadan and Its Traditions
English Translation
Ramadan is a holy month for Muslims. They consider it a time of worship and closeness to God. In this month, the Holy Qur’an was revealed to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), and therefore it holds a very important place in Islamic history. During the daytime in Ramadan, Muslims fast from dawn until sunset. They do not eat or drink, and they avoid some habits to strengthen their faith and learn patience. Fasting reminds people of the suffering felt by the poor and teaches them compassion. After sunset, Muslims break the fast with a meal called iftar, which often includes dates, soup, and different local dishes. At night, Muslims go to mosques for the Tarawih prayer. It is a long prayer in which the Qur’an is recited and performed in congregation. Muslims are also encouraged to give charity and help the poor during the month. At the end of Ramadan, Muslims celebrate Eid al-Fitr, wearing new clothes and exchanging greetings and gifts. Ramadan is not only a time of food and fasting, but also a season of reflection, faith, and good deeds. It offers people the chance to strengthen their relationship with God, their families, and their communities.
