In Spain, pharmacies are easy to find in cities and villages. They show a big green cross that shines at night, so a traveler quickly sees where to buy medicines. Most pharmacies open in the morning and close in the evening, from Monday to Friday, with a midday break in some places. On Saturday they often work only part time. When other shops are closed, there is a pharmacy on duty, which notices on the door indicate, so a person does not need to panic if he suddenly becomes ill at night. For prescription medicines one needs a prescription from a doctor. The pharmacist checks the name, the dose, and sometimes the health insurance card. Without a prescription one can buy a common remedy for headache, sore throat, a cold, allergies, or sunburn. The pharmacist listens carefully to the symptoms, asks about age, weight, and allergies, and recommends a suitable product. If the medicine is not available, he offers a generic version with a lower price. A tourist should not be afraid. Many pharmacists speak a little English, and they patiently explain how to take pills or a spray, how many times per day, and for how many days. One can also ask about creams, sunscreen, bandages, a thermometer, or nasal drops. Payment is possible by cash or card. It is important to read the label calmly, and follow the instructions. In this way everyone feels safer during a stay in Spain.
