A Day at the Market in Herat

English Translation

The Herat market is in the center of the old and lively city. Every morning, the shops open one by one, and the smell of fresh bread and hot tea spreads through the alleys. People come from near and far neighborhoods to shop and to greet their friends. In this market, colorful carpets, Herat’s famous saffron, dried nuts, seasonal fruits, and fragrant spices are sold. The sellers speak with a smile, explain the prices, and bargain with customers. The sound of children’s laughter, the sound of the scale, and the call to prayer from the nearby mosque make the market warm and alive. The streets are narrow, but everyone moves patiently. An old traveler has come from far away and asks about the history of the city. A woman artist buys pottery dishes and a bracelet to make her home beautiful. A young man who has just found a job buys rice, tea, and a little meat for his family. Tourists from other countries talk about the minarets of Herat and take photos. At the end of the day, the sun grows calm and small lights turn on. People return home with full bags and peaceful hearts, happy after seeing the market.
