Nowruz: Traditions of the Persian New Year

نوروز جشن بزرگ سال نو در ایران و چند کشور همسایه است. این جشن هر سال در آغاز بهار برگزار می شود، معمولا در روز اول فروردین. در این زمان هوا کم کم گرم می شود و درختان سبز می شوند. مردم برای نوروز خانه تکانی می کنند. آنها گرد و خاک را پاک می کنند، فرش ها را می شویند و وسایل را مرتب می کنند تا یک شروع تازه داشته باشند. سفره هفت سین هم خیلی مهم است. روی سفره هفت چیز با حرف سین می گذارند، مانند سیب، سیر، سبزه، سکه، سنجد، سماق و سرکه. هر کدام معنی خاصی دارد، مثل سلامتی، برکت و امید. خانواده ها در شب سال نو کنار هم می نشینند، دعا می خوانند و به هم تبریک می گویند. کودکان معمولا عیدی می گیرند، یعنی پول یا هدیه کوچک. در روزهای بعد، مردم به دید و بازدید می روند. آنها به خانه خویشاوندان و دوستان می روند، چای می نوشند و شیرینی می خورند. در بعضی شهرها موسیقی سنتی پخش می شود و رقص محلی هم اجرا می شود. سیزده روز بعد، مردم سیزده بدر را در طبیعت می گذرانند. آنها به پارک یا دشت می روند، بازی می کنند، غذا می پزند و می خندند. نوروز زمانی برای شادی، صلح و تازه شدن دل ها است.

English Translation

Nowruz is the big New Year celebration in Iran and several neighboring countries. This holiday takes place every year at the start of spring, usually on the first day of Farvardin. At this time the weather slowly becomes warm and the trees turn green. People do spring cleaning for Nowruz. They remove dust, wash the carpets, and organize the items to have a fresh start. The Haft-Seen table is also very important. On the table they put seven things that begin with the letter S, such as apple, garlic, sprouts, coin, senjed, sumac, and vinegar. Each one has a special meaning, like health, blessing, and hope. Families sit together on New Year’s Eve, say prayers, and congratulate each other. Children usually receive eidi, meaning money or a small gift. In the following days, people visit one another. They go to the homes of relatives and friends, drink tea, and eat sweets. In some cities, traditional music is played and local dance is performed. Thirteen days later, people spend Sizdah Bedar in nature. They go to a park or plain, play games, cook food, and laugh. Nowruz is a time for joy, peace, and renewal of hearts.
