Swahili Reading Passages

Swahili, or Kiswahili, is spoken by more than 80 million people across East Africa, serving as a lingua franca in countries such as Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. It belongs to the Bantu language family but is heavily influenced by Arabic due to centuries of trade along the Indian Ocean coast. Today, Swahili is an official language of the African Union and several East African nations. The language carries with it a rich cultural heritage, including oral traditions, poetry, and music such as *taarab* and *bongo flava*. Swahili is also a symbol of Pan-African identity, celebrated for its role in uniting diverse communities and its growing presence in global education and diplomacy.
